The Beyond Beginner Series is a monthly program of classes which teach more of the skills and techniques you will need for a wide variety of quilts. Each month Philippa will focus on a different technique - sharing all her tips, tricks and advice to enable you to confidently achieve beautiful results.
Philippa has chosen the classes carefully so that each month you will learn a skill the builds on the previous months lessons. It is the perfect series for a Beginner Quilter to confidently progress to intermediate and advanced skills - learning the best way to achieve each result from an expert quilter, and producing beautiful work along the way.
Here is what people are saying about the classes:
Spent the day working on this block which is the most precise block I think I have ever done. I learned so much. Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant Phillipa. I have been piecing for a number of years now, but this class has given me a great insight into improving my methods. Your explanations and instructions are so clear.
Watched this many times yesterday when stitching my double row of piping in place! It's so great to be able to have you in my sewing studio with me.
The classes in the series are (in this order):
Learn about choosing fabrics, accurate rotary cutting, the best half square triangle and flying geese units, how to avoid chopped off points, successful pressing and so much more.
Create beautiful borders around your quilts – with straight corners or mitred corners with matching of patterns. Then finish off your quilt with perfect Facings so that the design goes all the way to the edge, and your corners are smooth and lump free.
One of Philippa’s signature techniques to add colour and texture to your quilt tops using patterned quilting. Starting with simple spirals and flowers, and building to stippling, leaves, bricks and butterflies, Philippa explains how to sew each shape from first principles and will quickly have you gaining confidence and producing beautiful designs.
Learn how to create Piping, Philippa’s favourite finishing flourish, with Philippa's own techniques for corners, edges, and double rows. Then learn how to create the neatest binding for your quilt's edges with Philippa's method for perfectly executed 1/2 inch binding.
Convex and concave curves, hearts, perfect points, and the smoothest turned edge circles you have seen! We will look at ways of embellishing these with rick-rack. You will be sure to leave class with a wealth of creative ideas and new found technical skills.
Create a fun quilt top with an easy curved piecing central heart motif surrounded by two borders. You will learn the easiest curved piecing which is trimmed to size so everyone can achieve great results!
A deep dive into satin stitch including how to create perfect satin stitch circles and how to deal with corners and points. Moving on to Blanket stitch we cover perfect circles, smooth curves and sharp points.
Trapunto is a technique to add additional wadding/batting behind certain areas of your quilt to make the quilt top (literally) stand out. Philippa wil share everything you need to know including materials, machine settings, sewing machine feet, and the full process to get outstanding results.
Prairie Points and Rouleau loops add drama and movement to your quilt. Philippa offers detailed instructions on different styles of Prairie points and Rouleau loops before looking at how to use them in your designs along the quilt edge or enclosed in a seam.
Paper piecing is a useful technique to create intricate designs simply and accurately. Philippa starts with English paper piecing - demonstrating hand sewn and machine sewn hexagons, apple cores and clams. Then using Foundation piecing to make the pineapple block and a simple tree design with lots of suggestions for colour choices and design variations.
Stems and bias strips are an elegant way of adding plant like stems and patterns to your quilt top. This class covers skinny strips to use as stems, wavy/curved bias strips using stitched and pressed methods, yarn fillings to provide padding, and how to create twisted strips.
In the second Free Motion class Philippa concentrates on the many variations of the feather motif. Straight feathers, curved feathers, circular wreath of feathers, alternative shapes and options including leaf and flower motifs.
If you purchased the classes individually, they would cost you £25 each - or £300 for all 12

When you purchase the Beyond Beginner Series:
Picked up many tips for straightening up before binding. Although sewing for 40+years it proves you can always learn new things.
I started quilting last year when I retired and have made a few small quilts. My goodness I wish I’d seen these videos before I started, you have explained so much in such a simple way.
Brilliant course which I have now watched through twice. Each time I have remembered different tips as I have gone along and can see the improvement in each small project.
